This year we start growing our own Okra from seed. At the moment we have 20-25 flowering plants and another 60 young plants (2 months old) under shade cover. Our Okra plants are growing using traditional organic gardening methods. This means NO CHEMICAL FERTILISERS and NO CHEMICAL PESTICIDES.
We allow our seed pods to grow to maturity on the plant, than we pic and hang them to dry in our greenhouse. Our bees germinate the flowering plants to ensure good germination rates.
Okra has these beautiful cream flowers that the bees love. The center is a deep purple/red colour. Here you can see flowers that haven’t opened either. Between each stem and leaf a flower will appear. They only last a few days before falling off.

We grow our okra in slightly clay soil with a good mix of organic matter (compost, straw and rice husks). Seedling are generally started off in trays to avoid being eaten by ants and other insects. Once the seedlings are roughly 3 inches in height, they are transplanted into garden beds.
Once your plant matures, it will provide pods on a daily basis. It’s best to cut these pods to the length of your index finger. Long pods become stringy and hard to eat. On average from three small rows we would receive 300-500g of Okra pods daily.

This is a mature seed pod. At this size, they’re too big to eat and are purely for seed collection. This one is at least 30cm in length. It took roughly 4 days to get to this size.
We have noticed that Okra does not get eaten by Bantam chickens or many insects as it has hairs on the stems and leaves. They are also very hardy plant that can surviving through a thai summer with poor water supply. During wet season, they seem to take off and produce alot of seed pods.
