The white variation grows as well as the blue. This native climber has bright white coloured flowers. It’s a hardy plant that does well in all three seasons. We have grow these from seed to act as a plant privacy wall for our front yard arbor. They have small oval shaped light green leaves.
The Blue butterfly pea will flower for the entire year and has small seed pods that generally contain 10-15 seeds. If left to dry, they will twist and pop open. We have ours on a basic bamboo stand that it seems to love. It also has about 6-7 hours of sunlight a day which it seems to like.
Some of its qualities include: memory enhancing, nootropic, antistress, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, tranquilizing, and sedative properties. The flower has many uses including mixing it with honey and lemon to make a refreshing after dinner drink. It can also be added with mint, cinnamon, passion fruit, and ginger.
The flower can also be cooked with rice to make the rice turn blue. The seeds can be used as a laxative.
The seeds are generally very easy to grow as long as it’s warm. I placed about 20 in a 50 pot seedling tray with some standard potting mix (20 baht bags contain soil, coco peat and charcoal). They sprouted in a week and grew to 1 foot in 2-3 months. We watered them every day.
